John Cooper was born in Maryland.
He was a Civil War veteran. He enlisted in Baltimore June 29, 1863, and mustered there the same day as a private with Co. I, 9th Maryland Infantry, for what was to have been a six-month enlistment. He was captured at Charles Town, West Virginia, October 18, 1863, along with most of five companies of the regiment, and confined at Richmond on November 2. Paroled at City Point, Virginia, March 7, 1864, and arrived at Camp Parole, Annapolis, Maryland, two days later. He was honorably discharged March 20, 1864.
In 1920, he lived in New Freedom, York County, Pennsylvania, with Charles & Wilhelmina Cooper, his son and daughter-in-law, and died there.
