John Chism was the fiddler for the early Arkansas string band ''Pope's Arkansas Mountaineers''. The group was formed and funded by J.D. Pope, owner of Pope's Music in Searcy, as a way to promote his business. Pope's Arkansas Mountaineers recorded 8 sides, 6 of which were issued, for Victor on 2 February 1928 in Memphis TN. They were among the first groups to have been recorded from Arkansas, and their place in Arkansas history and early country music is of great note-Provided by George Towell
