Lowell's obituary states that he was born in Douds, Iowa, which is in Van Buren County. However, according to Lowell's birth record, he was born in Soap Creek Township, in Davis County: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VR86-B9X
The picture of Lowell that I have posted is from the 1982 Pettit Family Reunion at the farm of Lowell's brother Mel Pettit, near Ottumwa, Iowa. I have written more about this reunion on Mel's memorial page.
I remember everyone in the family talking about what a good sense of humor Lowell had. He was always laughing and pulling jokes on other people. Whenever he and his wife, Jean, would come back to Ottumwa to visit, they would always spend time at the Ottumwa Manor Nursing Home with Jean's mother, and the elderly people there loved to see Lowell come. Sometimes when they visited the nursing home, he would dress up as a clown, and everyone always looked forward to that.
Lowell was of the Christian faith, and he had a serious side too. A family member had brought a young friend with them to the reunion - a little girl who had a serious disease and probably wouldn't live more than a few more years. Lowell had everyone gather into a circle, and he prayed for her healing.
