His Life

John Bemenderfer was born in Loudon County, Va., February 29, 1820 and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Clark, January 11, 1911 Aged 90 Years, 10 months and 11 days. He was the son of Peter and Susan Bemenderfer and was the last of a family of 12 children, four sister and twelve brothers having preceded him to the world beyond.

He was united in marriage on May 10, 1854 to Elizabeth Chapman who survives him. To this union were born two children. Marion Bemenderfer, who died August 30, 1905 and Nannie Clark, the wife of John C. Clark, a prosperous farmer in Smithfield Township. Besides the widow there survives the daughter and six granchildren to mourn his departure.

In the fall of 1854 Mr. Bememderfer came to Steuben County and resided on a farm north of Barker's Chapel on the Steuben and DeKalb county line. Here he lived until 1864 when he located in Waterloo, at which place he made his home until Oct. 4 1907, when, with his wife he went to live with his daughter in Smithfield township, both of them being to feeble to live alone, and they have been tenderly cared for in their declining days by Mr. & Mrs. Clark.

Mr. Bemenderfer was a man of high ideals in life, being a christian of faith and fortitude, and in his younger days was a regular attendant at church services. He was upright, honorable in his dealings, and had many friends, who will regret to learn of his death. For several years he has been in quite feeble health, and was a great care to the family, who administered every want in his old age.
