Aleda A. Onken, daughter of Gerd and Josephine (Dittmer) Onken, was born December 21, 1909 in Ireton, IA. When she was young the family moved to Chester, SD where she grew up and received her education.
Shortly after high school, Aleda married William Gienapp in Chester on January 19, 1930. The two lived on a farm outside of Chester for 8 years. Aleda and William also lived in Madison and Howard before retiring in Sioux Falls.
While she was in Sioux Falls, Aleda worked for the "Town and Country" restaurant as a cook. She was extremely proud of this job and took pride in making her food perfect.
Aleda was described as being an extremely independent person and also being very feisty. In her free time Aleda was a very active woman. She loved baking cookies and sending them to members of the family all over the country and was affectionately known as "Cookie Monster". She was also famous for her baking her "Gooy Rolls". Aleda also crocheted afghans and towels and made quilts for all the grandchildren. Church was very important to Aleda and she was very grateful for all the rides to church that the other members gave her. She also loved singing in the choir and listening to the church music. Most of all, Aleda was especially fond of family gatherings and getting her picture taken with all the grandchildren. She loved her family and will be greatly missed.
Grateful for having shared her life are her daughters, Betty Ernst, Hemet, CA and Doroty Boydand her husband, Ralph, Pasadena, CA; her son, Harold Gienapp and his wife Marge, Beverly Hills, FL; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren and one sister, Leona Hotwieler, Madison, SD.
