James S Reeder was a veteran of the Civil War. He was a resident of Earlsville, Delaware County, Iowa, when he enlisted on 23 Sept 1861 at the age of 20 years. Mustered in Co B 4th Iowa Cavalry on 23 Nov 1861. Promoted 6th Corporal 1 Jan 1862. Reduced to ranks 1 Aug 1862 (cause not reported.) Mustered out 4 Dec 1864 at Memphis, Tennessee. Term of enlistment expired.

James applied for his pension 18 Aug 1890. His application is #933.850 and his certificate #1080.110. His wife, Laura, applied for her widow's pension in Iowa on 4 Feb 1914. Her application is #102.1726 and her certificate #774.083.

James Reeder was a native of New York, the son of William Reeder and Jane Harrison. He married Laura Cornelia Pierce, also a native of New York, Dec 1866 in Earlville, Iowa. James and Laura had the following known children: Iona, Infant Son, James Melvin, Clara C, Clarence C, and Arthur J.

James died at Earlville in 1913 at the age of 72 years 1 month.
