Death: Jan. 6, 1812

Oliver Dawley of Exeter, RI was the son of Michael Dawley (1710-Jan 1776) and Freelove (Smith) Allen Dawley (24 Jul 1711-Abt. 1775). Michael Dawley was born in Exeter, RI, where he also died. Freelove was born in Washington County, RI, and she died in Exeter, RI.

He married Mercy (Sherman), daughter of Ichabod Sherman and Mary (Young). They married March 31, 1768 in Exeter, RI by Justice Hopson Wilcox. Together, Oliver and Mercy had twelve children. Their children are: Ansteris (Dawley) Sherman, John Dawley, Job Dawley, Mary (Dawley) Austin, James Dawley, Martha (Dawley) Avery, Michael Dawley, Freelove (Dawley) Kenyon, Hannah (Dawley) Webster, Oliver Dawley, Stephen Dawley, and Renewed Dawley.

Oliver's Military Service included the French & Indian War. In 1751, he marched on alarm. His rank was a PVT. Oliver again marched on alarm in Aug 1757. He also served in the campaign of 1761. In 1776, Oliver became a Patriot of the American Revolutionary War. He signed a Loyalty Oath in 1778.

His will is dated 2 Sep 1811 & proved 2 Mar 1812, Pgs. 70-81 and account receipts Pgs. 122-23. The will lists his occupation as a Yeoman. Oliver's wife and children are mentioned in it. The will states that his son, James was to be "supported for the rest of his life." [Exeter Town Council & Probate, Vol, 7, 1802-1810]; [Exeter Wills, Vol. 10, P. 217.]

DAR lists Oliver's death as 2 Mar 1812. His headstone lists 6 Jan 1812, age 71 years. It is possible that the death date listed on Oliver's headstone is his burial date. He is buried next to his wife, Mercy (Sherman) Dawley.
