Dr. Paul S. Baker was born in Carroll, Iowa on June 10, 1921, the son of Linzy Page Baker and Elna Marie Swanson Baker.

He was raised in Carroll where he received his grade and high school education. Interested in accounting, Paul furthered his education at AIB in Des Moines, Iowa, until moving to Washington, D.C. in 1940 where he was employed with the War Department.

Paul served his country in the United States Army during World War II from March 10, 1942 until his discharge on January 16, 1946. He received the rank of Master Sergeant. During his time in the service he was assigned to the records department in the office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. His department spent many hours preparing plans for future operations maneuvers and his position involved extensive travel to the Allied conferences in Malta, Yalta, Quebec. A highlight of his time in service was traveling to a conference in Cairo on the USS Iowa with President Franklin D. Roosevelt aboard.

During his time in the service in Washington, D.C., Paul met June Williams. They were married there on April 4, 1945. They were blessed with three children: Ross, Barbara and Robert. They made their home in Alexandria, Virginia, until Paul's discharge. They moved to Chicago, Illinois, where Paul had enrolled in Northern Illinois College of Optometry. He received his Doctor of Optometry Degree in 1948.

After receiving his degree, the Bakers moved to Denison, Iowa, where Paul opened his private practice February 1, 1949. He operated his solo practice until November of 1986 when he became associated with Drs. Kuhlmann and Brownmiller. He retired on November 1, 1990. His retirement years were spent in Denison where he had more time to pursue his hobbies of playing golf, bridge, reading and crossword puzzles.

Dr. Baker was an active member of the Denison community. He served nine years on the Denison School Board, with part of those years as board president. He was a member and past president of Kiwanis; American Legion Post 8; Ninus L. Hunt V.F.W., Post 2504; Sylvan Lodge No. 507, A.F. and A. M.; Sioux City Consistory; Scottish Rite of Free Masonry; ABU BEKR Shrine Temple in Sioux City, Iowa; and was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Denison where he served as Senior Warden; usher; and was on the Bishop's Committee.

Paul died at his home in Denison on Saturday evening, November 6, 2010. He was 89 years, 4 months and 26 days.

Including his parents, Linzy and Elna Baker, Paul was also preceded in death by three sisters: Lola Schumacher, Lynette Reinemund and Lorraine Waples.

Those remaining to cherish his memory include his wife of over 65 years June Baker of Denison, Iowa; three children and their spouses: Ross and Mary Baker of Potomac, Maryland; Barbara and Colonel James Hougas of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Robert Baker and Margo Mickelson of Maple Grove, Minnesota; four grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 10, 2010, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. Glenn Rankin officiating. Music for the service included the congregation singing "The King of Love my Shepherd Is" and "The Strife is O'er" with Carol Block serving as organist. Those serving as pallbearers included Ross Baker, Robert Baker, James Hougas, Jr., James Hougas III, Robert Hougas and Michael McLaughlin. Interment, with Military Honors was provided by the American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa. Following the graveside rites, the family invited all in attendance to join them at Cronk's in Denison for lunch and fellowship.
