Husband of Eliza Fox.

"Edmund Bacon, brilliant member of the Edgefield bar, was a native of Georgia, born at Augusta April 17, 1776. His father was a Virginia who moved to Georgia. As a student at Richmond Academy, he was chosen to give the address of welcome to President George Washington who visited that place in 1791 on his Southern tour. President Washington was so impressed with the youthful orator that he presented him with several law books.

"Edmund Bacon later settled in Edgefield and established his family at this place. He married Eliza Fox at Augusta on January 29, 1799, and they were the parents of five children: John, Edmund, Sarah, James and Thomas. He was said to be 'Ned Brace' of 'Georgia Scenes' by Augustus Longstreet, who wrote the epitaph for the tomb of Edmund Bacon." (Addenda). Edited to correct information.

(About three feet from his grave is a blank monument similar to his which is believed to be that of his wife, Eliza Fox.).

Inscription

Within this grave wrapt in his last long sleep lies one whose doom a wife and children weep. Whose many friends with anxious sighs regret the loss of virtues they ne'er forget! The loss of virtues! No - the mortal form may waste below and feed the hungry worm. The heart that keenly felt for others' woe. The voice of eloquence - wits joyous flow may fade away or rest within the gloom of death's domain - this cold narrow tomb. But the bright mind on wings of bliss shall rise to dwell immortal in its native skies.
