Married Etoyle Strebeck on August 10, 1924 in Electric Mills, Kemper County, MS. In 1931, he moved his family to Crossett Arkansas where he went to work for the Crossett Lumber Company as a saw filer. He later opened Edwards Cycle Shop where he worked on and sold bicycles and lawnmowers. He was also a locksmith. Hemphill had a son, Billy Jack Edwards, and a daughter, Norma Dean Edwards Aunspaugh.
