Miles is the son of James R. Mixson & Rebecca Deloach. He enlisted, age 17, in the Confederate States Army on 13 April 1864 at Pocotaligo, South Carolina. He was mustered as a Private in Company B, Kirk's Squadron Cavalry. This regiment later consolidated with others and became known as Company C, 19th Battalion South Carolina Cavlary. There is a military marker on his memorial with the wrong service info for this man. See comments below by Jennie London.

(special thanks to Jennie London, great granddaughter, for the following info) Pension Application for Miles R. Mixson, which shows that he enlisted in 1862 and was discharged at the end of the war in 1865. The attached Muster Rolls show that he was in Kirk's Partisan Rangers at the time it became a part of the 19th SC Cavalry. As yet, no Muster Rolls for Kirk's Rangers have been found for Miles. However, from the Pension Application, it appears that he joined it sometime between the forming of that Squadron in July 1862 and the end of the year. Based on these documents, I believe that these are the only two companies in which Miles served, in spite of there being a marker on his grave which shows he was a Sgt in Co. C 5th GA Cavalry. Muster Rolls for this Company show the man to be M. K. Mixson, not M. R. Mixson. Plus, some of the dates showing MKM as being present in the GA cavalry are identical to those showing MRM in the 19th SC cavalry. And, the same man can not be in two places at the same time. This plaque was apparently based on some of the misinformation given to me several years ago by a now deceased cousin. And, which at first, I took as fact everything he told me. It was not until some years later, when I began my own research, that I began to find gross discrepancies in some of his "research." He apparently tried to make documents fit some family legends, rather than seeking to actually prove or disprove the stories.

Selena Tuten was the first wife of Miles, they married in 1866. Laura Horton was his second wife and they married in either 1874 or 1875.
