Barbara Balciunas.... was born in a small village in northern Lithuania. She married John Armonas in 1929, when he, an American Lithuanian came to visit the land of his parents. They purchased a farm but then decided it would be better to lease the farm and move to the US. In 1936, after the birth of their daughter they returned to Lithuania, this time deciding to stay, raise their daughter and also a son born in Lithuania. With echoes of war, her husband returned to America with the daughter to get the proper papers for Barbara and son to come to the US. WWII started September 1939 and all hopes of leaving for America soon vanished.
In 1948, mass deportations of Lithuanians to Siberia started. Barbara and her son where deported to a labor camp in Novostrioika, Siberia. She was accused of being an American spy in 1951 and received a 25 year sentence in prison.
Her husband and daughter worked 20 years for her release and that of her son. In 1960 the family was finally reunited.
A book "Leave Your Tears in Moscow" was published in 1961 telling the story of years she spent in Siberia.
