Daniel Shay was the son of Mary Shay. In 1860,he was a bricklayer living in West Hempfield Township,Lancaster,Pennsylvania,and stood 5'10'' tall with brown hair and gray eyes.
He enlisted in Lancaster on August 30 1864, and mustered into federal service the same day as a private with Co. K, 203rd Pennsylvania Infantry. He was shot in the knee on January 15 1865,during the final assault on Fort Fisher at Wilmington,North Carolina, and died February 3 1865 in McDougal U.S.General Hospital,Fort Schuyler,Bronx,New York.
