He married Mary Grove March 27, 1860, in York County, and fathered Margaret Jane (b. 01/05/61 - married James Nelson Cross), Elizabeth A. (b. @1864), James M. (b. @1868), and Annie R. (b. @1870). In 1860, he was a farmer living in Chanceford Township, York County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 4" tall with dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at York March 27, 1864, as a private with Co. C, 13th Pennsylvania Cavalry (117th Pa). On July 18, 1864, he deserted at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, and arrested in York January 31, 1865. A court-martial found him guilty of desertion, and sentenced him to lose all pending pay up to February 15, 1865, pay all transportation costs, lose $10 pay each month for eighteen subsequent months, and make good his lost time. He returned to duty and honorably discharged with his company July 14, 1865.
