Joseph was the son of Britain Britt and Sarah 'Sallie' Deaton. He married Rebecca Jane Morgan (b. Mar 27, 1845) daughter of James G. Morgan and Mary Ann Holland. She died within a couple of years of her husband. Records show they had 10 children: Lucinda b.1863 NC, Mary Elizabeth b.1865 NC, Lydia Jane b.1868 NC, Fannie E. b.1870 KS, Aaron M.b. 1872 KS, John C. b.1876 KS, William R.b. 1878 KS, Virgil b.1881 KS, Joseph b.1883 KS, Charles b.1884 KS.
