Levi J. "Bully" Courtright, Born in New York son of Martin called "Sheepskin" and Sally (BIGELOW) KORTRIGHT 01 July 1823; died 03 Sept 1861. The Start of the Civil War, he Enlisted in 4th Michigan Volunteer Infantry Company E, as Corporal, June 20, 1861, at Adrian, for 3 years, age 37. Mustered June 20, 1861. Died September 3, 1861, of wounds received on picket at Fort Woodbury near Hall, Arlington Heights. At the First Battle of Bull Run (called the Battle of Manassas by the Confederates) was fought on July 21, 1861, Levi Cortright was one of the Union dead, believed to be the first Hillsdale County soldier to be killed in the Civil War. His body was embalmed and shipped home, where a funeral service was held at the County Courthouse, the building known as "The Old Stone Pile." Farmer by trade. He left a wife and five small children, oldest child 14, youngest 2. Buried Oak Grove Cemetery, Hillsdale, Michigan.
