Lars O. Dammen was born in Aadalen, Norway, July 30, 1827. Here, he grew up to manhood and in 1849 he was united in marriage to Anna Skagnas. To this happy union eleven children were born, four being born while they were in Norway. In 1861, Lars together with his family decided to emigrate to the United States to try his fortune in a land which at that very time was in danger of breaking asunder. He settled on a farm in the town of York on which he stayed for five years, afterwhich he moved with his family to a farm in Yankee Hollow, where he resided until about 27 years ago, when he moved to Blanchardville to spend the remainder of his life. In 1915 he was bereft by the angel of death of his wife. Since then he has lived with Mr. and Mrs. Chris Peterson (daughter Karen) who have been renting his home. Lars was a carpenter by trade, having turned out some very fine work by his handicraft. He had always been of a strong sturdy nature and was seldom sick. This last spring he began to decline in health and during the last two weeks preceding his death he underwent much suffering, but he never complained. On Wednesday morning at 6:20 A.M. he was finally relieved of pain and passed to his well earned reward – a place with God and his angels above.
He leaves to mourn his death three sons and four daughters, four of his children having died in their youth. The children living are: Ole L. Dammen of Buffalo, Wis., John Dammen of Blanchardville, Martin Dammen of Fayette, Mrs. Thomas (Gunhild) Wahl of Blanchardville, Mrs. Gilbert (Mary) Hanson of Artesian, South Dakota, Mrs. Bertha Dokken of Blanchardville, Mrs. Chris (Karen) Peterson of Blanchardville. He is also survived by forty-nine grandchildren, sixty great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.
Lars was a member of the First Lutheran Church of this place and had always been deeply interested in the Gospel of Jesus Christ as revealed in the Bible and applied it in his life in this changing world according to his ability and knowledge. The community has been bereft of a kindly, reverent and sterling man by the death of Lars Dammen and the Blade united with the many friends of the deceased in extending our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family.
