Watkinsville - Thomas Merlyn Bennett, 79, of Watkinsville, died Thursday, March 06, 2008 at Athens Regional Medical Center.

Born in LaGrange, Georgia, he was the son of the late Edward Merlyn and Eunice Reason Bennett. A member of St. James United Methodist Church, "Mr. Tom" also tutored children at Pathways to Learning for the past eight years.

Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Carolyn McGuire Bennett; son, Richard Thomas "Rick" and (Pat) Bennett; daughters, Karen and (David) Castellon; the Revs. Kathy and (Bob) Gochenour; Sherrie and (Matt) Train; 11 grandchildren including Jeremy Thomas Bennett who preceded him in death and five great-grandchildren; brothers, Charles Bennett of Augusta and Alvin Bennett of Wellington, Florida; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 2008, at St. James United Methodist Church with burial at Oconee Memorial Park. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Family visitation will be Friday, March 7, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Lord & Stephens Funeral Home WEST.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. James United Methodist Church Building Fund in lieu of flowers.
