Edward W. "Ted" Allen, 90, died Thursday, September 18, 2003 at Penobscot Bay Medical Center, after an extended illness. Born in Malden, Massachusetts, October 18, 1912, he was the son of Fred L. and Louisa R. Watts Allen. One year later, his family moved to South Thomaston, where Mr. Allen has since resided. He was educated in local schools.
In earlier years, Mr. Allen had a home delivery route covering the Brooks area for Cushman Bakery. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve and later worked with the former Elgin Corporation in Rockland. From 1947 until his retirement in 1982, with his brother Gene, Ted owned and operated Camden Home Bakery in Camden.
Long active in community functions including volunteering at St. Bernard's Soup Kitchen, in 1995 Ted was recipient of the Courier Gazette Community Service Award.
He was a longtime Communicant of St. Bernards Catholic Church, Rockland.
Ted was pre-deceased by his first wife and mother of his children Lucy Cassidy Allen, his second wife Evelyn Milliken Allen and his third wife Myrtle Makinen Allen. He is survived three sons and their wives, Malcolm L. and Barbara Allen of Rochester, NY, Joseph L. and Dianne Allen of West Rockport, Fred L. and Sharon Allen of South Thomaston; one daughter, Diane Strange of South Thomaston; one brother Eugene Allen and his wife Ava of Owls Head, a niece Marie Paisley and her husband Bill off Kittery; a nephew Dan Allen and his wife Kathy of Rockland; nine grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Interment will be in St. James Catholic Cemetery, Erin Street, Thomaston (Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins on-line)
