Leonard was barely seventeen years old when he died. One of twelve children of a very religious family, Leonard was one of five who entered religious life or the priesthood. He followed his older brother, Brother Peter Basso, to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.
In 1915 Leonard joined the brothers at Metuchen, New Jersey, from St. John's in Indianapolis where the brothers encouraged his vocation. He began his novitiate the following year. While still a novice he became seriously ill. It was learned that he had an incurable cancer of the lower vertebrae. Leonard's mother cared for him at home, and the brothers from St. John's visited him daily.
Leonard was granted permission to pronounce his religious vows on his deathbed at home. He is buried in the family's plot at Holy Cross Cemetery in Indianapolis, just a few rows over from where eight other Brothers of the Sacred Heart are buried.

Rest In Peace, Most Beloved Brother Leonard. You Would Surely Have Made A Good Religious, But The Lord Had Other Plans For You. I Shall Keep You In My Prayers!|
