MACON - Hugh Key Sealy, M.D., 84, died Wednesday, October 21, 2009. Funeral services will be held at 11A.M. Saturday at Vineville United Methodist Church. Burial will be at 3P.M. in Hillcrest Cemetery in Reynolds, Georgia. Dr. Marcus Tripp and Dr. William W. Oliver will officiate. The family will greet friends following the funeral service at the church and asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Woodfield Academy, 4375 Rivoli Drive, Macon 31210 or the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, 304 Pierce Avenue, Macon 31204 or Reynolds United Methodist Church, 12 East Marion Street, Reynolds, GA 31076. -Dr. Sealy was born June 21, 1925 in Reynolds, Georgia to Parkie Camp Sealy and Hugh Key Sealy, Sr., who strongly believed in education and sacrificed greatly for their sons to receive it. He graduated in 1942 from Reynolds High School as valedictorian. Dr. Sealy was awarded a scholarship to Emory University by the Macon District Writing Competition. He attended Emory for four quarters, transferred to the University of Georgia for four quarters and then was accepted to Duke Medical School and began attending in 1944 at the age of nineteen. Dr. Sealy finished at Duke in 1947 at age 22 and then interned at the Macon Hospital for nine months. After serving an internal medicine internship and residency at Duke for two years, he joined the Army in 1950. He served 18 months in Korea in the Field Hospital and POW Camp at Tegue. -Later he returned to Duke to serve as Senior Resident from 1952-1953. Dr. Eugene Stead requested him to become Chief Resident, but he declined this honor to come back Georgia. He was Cardiac Fellow at Emory University for one year under Drs. Logue and Hurst. Dr. Sealy entered into private practice in Macon in 1953 in Cardiology and Internal Medicine with Drs. Tift and Hazelhurst. He served at Macon Hospital as Chief of Cardiology, opening the Coronary Care Unit which was the first one in Georgia and the second one in the Southeast. Dr. Sealy treated the first patients in Macon with coronary bypass, catheterization and pacemakers. He served for 35 years as chairman of the Cardiac Care Committee of the Medical Center of Georgia. -Dr. Sealy served on Hospital Authority from 1972-1978, first Physician-Chairman from 1977-1978 and proposed and named the MedCen Foundation in 1974. He was instrumental in the agreement between the Mercer Medical School and the Medical Center of Central Georgia. He was past president of the Bibb County Medical Society, past president of the 6th District Medical Society in 1973 and retired in 2000. He was in private practice for 46 years. -Dr. Sealy was a member of Vineville United Methodist Church, the Allen Sanders Fellowship Class, was one of the original members of the Macon Civic Club, a member of Idle Hour Golf and Country Club, the Duke Medical Alumni Association and Iron Dukes, the American College of Physicians. -Dr. Sealy is survived by his wife, Connie Powell Sealy of Macon; children, Nancy A. Sealy of Forsyth, Key Sealy Tucker (David) of Forsyth, Parker Virginia Sealy of Macon and Erin Constance Sealy of Macon; one niece and three nephews, one great-niece; and his faithful dogs. -The family wishes to thank all the great care given to him by the staff at the Medical Center of Central Georgia. Special thanks to his personal caregivers, Nathan Franklin, Jack Gibson, Carey Widener, Anna Davis and Debbie Glover.
