OBITUARY: Clarence Hendershott

Clarence O. Hendershott, age 80, of Moscow passed away Sept. 7, at Gritman Medical Center in Moscow. Clarence was born on July 24, 1926 to Cass and Edna Gaye Boring Hendershott in Usk, Wash. He grew up and attended school in Usk. In 1944 he joined the Navy and was in the military until 1946. Clarence met his first wife, Wanda Plumley, in Moscow. They got married on July 27, 1947 in Usk. They first lived in Usk but moved many times between Washington and Idaho due to Clarence working as a logger. In 1961 they moved to Moscow and Clarence began working for the city's water department. He married Elma Christmann Schafer on May 1, 1979. Clarence retired from the city in 1989. Clarence is survived by his wife, Elma, of Moscow; children, Raymond and wife Marlinda Hendershott of Onaway, Idaho, Ruth and husband, Tom Hink, of East Wenatchee, Wash., Leeann and husband, Roger Patterson, of Marysville, Wash., Kitty and husband, Larry Balkum, of Arlington, Texas, Lewis and wife, Gladys Schafer, of Nampa, Idaho, and JoAnn Schafer and companion Pat of Tacoma, Wash.; and 14 grandchildren, numerous great and great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers and sisters, Waldo Hendershott, Gertie Wright, Ronald Hendershott, Norman Hendershott, Margaret Demers, and Lila Ewing. Clarence is preceded in death by his twin brother Vance Hendershott, sister, Violet Apperspach and a step-daughter, Shirley Whorl. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept, 12, at Paradise Hills Church of God. Jay McCoy will be officiating. Burial will follow at Moscow Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 to noon on Tuesday at Short's Funeral Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of Short's Funeral Chapel of Moscow. Memorials may be made to the Moscow Volunteer Ambulance.
