Charles E. Mumford, retired Middletown merchant, died about 10 o'clock Friday evening at the Frederick Memorial Hospital to which he had been taken by ambulance a few hours earlier following a sudden illness at his home.
Until a few weeks ago when he sold the business, Mr. Mumford had owned the Mumford general store in Middletown which he had operated for the past 11 years. Prior to that time he had clerked in Middletown stores.
A son of the late Richard and Susan Main Mumford, Mr. Mumford was 74 years of age. He was a devout member of the Lutheran church, Middletown, and of the Men's Bible class of the Sunday School. He belonged to the Jr. OUAM and to the Knights of Pythias.
Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Annie Mumford; three daughters, Mrs. Olive Culler, Frederick; Miss Amy Mumford, at home; Mrs. Mary Morgan, Middletown; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Mrs. Harlan Phleeger, Middletown.
The body will be removed to the late home this evening where it will remain until Monday morning. Then it will be taken to the Middletown funeral home where services will be conducted at two p.m. Monday by Rev. Howard McCarney. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery, Middletown.
