Pressley Bell Brawley Jr., passed away peacefully, Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at Genesis Eldercare Center of Mooresville. He was 78 years old. Son of the late Pressley Bell Brawley and Florence Watson Brawley, he was born May 24, 1930 in Mooresville.

The Brawleys immigrated from Ireland to Iredell County in 1771 and have remained since. He graduated from North Carolina State University in 1952 and then began working at Mooresville Mills before serving as first lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict until he was honorably discharged as a captain of the Army Reserve. He married Eloise Jarrett Brawley in the spring of 1957.

Mr. Brawley graduated from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1958 and joined the law practice of Mr. Zebulon Vance Turlington on Main Street in Mooresville.

He was a lifelong member of Mooresville's First Presbyterian Church serving as an elder, deacon, trustee, youth club Bible teacher and Sunday school teacher. His devotion to God's work was not only through the church but also at the kitchen table where he shared his faith with his daughters. He served his community as a volunteer fireman, a member of the rescue squad, past director of Jaycees, past director of the Merchants Association, past president of the Iredell Bar Association, member of the American Bar Association, N.C. Academy of Trial Lawyers, past president of the Rotary Club, past president of the Iredell County Workshop, executive director of the Urban Renewal Board, Christian Mission, Gideons, past commander of the American Legion Post 66, Boy Scout Councilman, Girl Scout Councilman, past local and state officer of the Tuberculosis Association.

He demonstrated his values through the way he lived. He loved hunting, fishing, flying, farming, sitting in the shade of the big tree in his parents' yard and a good practical joke.

Mr. Brawley is survived by his brother, Dr. Bob Watson Brawley and sister-in-law, Eleanor Riggins Brawley, of Charlotte; as well as his sister, Betty Gail Brawley Pitts, of Newton; his aunt, Sarah Brawley Jennings (100 years old), of Greenville, S.C.; his children, Mary Ann Brawley Poteat and husband, Joe, of Davidson, Linda Brawley Wittig and husband, Jeff, of Houston, Texas, Caroline Brawley Gwinn and husband, Layton, of Hopkins, S.C.; and his grandchildren, Joseph Poteat, Ellie Poteat, Ashbrook Gwinn, Layton Gwinn, Virginia Gwinn, Caroline Ashton Wittig and "Jack" Wittig.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 9, at First Presbyterian Church, Mooresville, with Dr. Clay Brown officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church parlor. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gideon's International Mooresville Camp, P.O. Box 872, Mooresville, NC 28115. Cavin-Cook Funeral Home in Mooresville is serving the family of Mr. Brawley.
