Philip served as a Major & Pilot on B-24L #44-49278, 829th Bomber Squadron, 485th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on December 30, 1941 in Manchester, New Hampshire. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Sales Clerk and also as Single, without dependents.

B-24L #44-49278 took off from Spinazzola, Italy on a combat bombing mission. At takeoff the left raft released and messed up the left stabilizer and elevator causing the B-24 to pull up into a stalled attitude. The pilot, Major Cummings, felt that he shouldn't try to land the plane and was given instructions for him and the rest of the crew to bail out.

Four of the crew were able to bail out but the remaining crew went down with the plane that crashed approximately 8 miles East North East of Spinazzola airfield during the war.

Philip was "Killed In Action" in this crash.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
