Lizzie may well have been one of the earliest victims of the so-called "Spanish Flu" pandemic. Beginning in the American Middle West prior to 1917, this unusually virulent strain of flu (influenza) killed between 50 and 100,000,000 people world-wide prior to 1920. The worst epidemic in recorded human history, it killed twice as many people as the Black Death of medieval times-and twice as many people as the First World War....
