Frances Long born 4 August 1864 in Cresco, Howard, County, Iowa was the only daughter of James and Bridget Butler Long. As a young child she lived in Howard County,Iowa and Dakota and Lafayette County, Missouri before coming to Vail, Crawford County, Iowa in 1874 with her parents.
Frankie was a lady of unusual intelligence with a lovely disposition and character, but was physically delicate. For several years prior to her marriage she had taught school in Vail. On 24 August 1884 Frances married George W Nicholson a successful business man at Saint Ann's Catholic Church in Vail. They then took the noon train east, where they spent some days visiting relatives and friends. On their return to Vail they took up residence in the lovely home George had furnished for his bride.
In 1888 the Nicholson's moved to Denison, Iowa and in 1892 they moved to Grand Junction, Iowa. Frankie and George were the parents of four children Grace, Georgie and John who died in infancy and Georgina.
Frankie was ill for several years and finally died from consumpion in Grand Junction surrounded by her loving family on 26 December 1896 at age 32 years 4 months and 22 days. As a faithful and consistent member of the Catholic Church she received the highest funeral rites in a service at Saint Ann's Church in Vail on 29 December with Rev Father Murphy officiating. She was laid to rest beside her two sons in Saint Ann's cemetery. Frankie was survived by her husband George, daughters Grace age eleven and Georgina age three and her brother James Long and mother Bridget Long.
