Mr. Eugene Coker went home to be with our Lord on Sunday, November 15, 2009 at the Southeast Alabama Medical Center surrounded by love with his family and Pastor Allen Leach present after an extended illness. Coker was born January 29, 1929 in Columbus, Georgia and raised in Southern Alabama.

Funeral services honoring Mr. Coker's life will be 2 P.M. Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at Cottonwood Baptist Church with the Reverends Allen Leach and John Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery under the direction of Ward Wilson Funeral Home.

The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 from 6 to 8 P.M.

Chief Coker enlisted in the United States Navy in 1948 following the marriage to Jacquline Knight Coker, in 1950. During his Naval career he devoted himself to honor his flag and country receiving many awards, medals and decorations including a Navy Achievement Medal, National Defense Medal, Expeditionary Ribbon, Viet Nam Service Ribbon, Viet Nam Campaign Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation and a Combat Action Ribbon. During his three tours in Viet Nam he was wounded in action and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal. He was also decorated with a Bronze Star with Combat Valor while displaying discipline, honor, courage and commitment to defend his country. With over twenty years of service Coker retired as Chief Boatswain Mate in 1971 in Orlando, Florida. Upon returning to his home state of Alabama, he pursued a second career in law enforcement which led to him being appointed Assistant Chief of Police for the town of Slocomb following with becoming Chief of Police for the Town of Cottonwood, Alabama for the next thirteen years. Even after his retirement, while on a fishing trip, he continued to display acts of bravely and commitment to his community by stopping a bank robbery in progress in Malone, Florida and received a commendation from the Jackson County Sheriff's Department.

Mr. Coker is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Jacquline Coker of Cottonwood, three sons, Bobby and Pam Coker of Slocomb, David and Teresa Coker of Va. Beach, VA; Tim Coker of Dothan; two daughters, Patsy Coker of Richmond, VA; and Marcy Coker of Va. Beach, Va. He was blessed with 11 grandchildren, Shannon Oliver, Kristen Livingston, Brandi and Kaci Coker, Joshua and Kristopher Smith, Jacqueline, Ruby and Emma Coker, Brittany and Courtney Coker and two great-granddaughters, Tatem and Addalyne Livingston. He also left behind numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Mickey Eugene Coker and his parents, Otis Clifford Coker and Mary Annie Brown and brother, Otis Clifford Coker, Jr. and two sisters, Agnes Hartley and Delphia Little.
