Aged Native Daughter buried in Porterville
PORTERVILLE (Tulare Co.), April 12 – Private funeral rites were held this morning in the Loyd-Frietzsche Chapel for Mrs. Emma Gilmer Abbey, 82, with Rev. J. A. Milligan of the First Congregational Church officiating. Mrs. Abbey died yesterday in the family home, following a long illness.
Mrs. Abbey, a daughter of Rufus Gilmer who came to California during the gold rush, was born at what is now Placerville, then Hangtown, August 11, 1858, and was 1 year old when the Gilmer family moved to Tulare County and settled near Farmersville. She was married on July 14, 1881, to Arthur A. Abbey, early day livestock man of this district and one of the first to make commercial orange plantings here.
Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Abbey, of whom three now are living. They are Mrs. Rosalind Mast, Columbus, Ohio; and Lawrence and Hester Abbey of this city.
