Edward O. Travis Sr., 85, and Anne Bacon Travis, 83, died in their home in Avondale Estates on July 15, 2009.
Born in Roanoke Rapids, NC, he was the son of Edward L Travis and Anne Kitchin Travis. He attended Virginia Episcopal School at Lynchburg VA, and North Carolina State University. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1943 and served as a firefighter in France in WWII. After the war, he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering at NC State and took a position with Mead Corp, Chillicothe OH.
Born in Columbus OH, Anne Ryals Bacon was the daughter of Philip Edloe Bacon and Hazel Stack Bacon. She attended London High School in London OH, and graduated from Miami University with a degree in Economics. Ed and Anne met in Chillicothe and were married November 26, 1949 in London OH. They moved to Greenville SC in 1955 and to Atlanta in 1958 where Ed worked with Simons-Eastern until retirement.
Anne was a homemaker and held several part time jobs, including teaching needlework at Rich's. After retirement, Ed and Anne enjoyed traveling, gardening, and spending time with family. They instilled a sense of responsibility and a value of education in them all. They were devoted to each other through a 60 year marriage. The family attended the Cathedral of St. Philip.
In their later years, Anne and Ed attended Holy Trinity Church in Decatur. Ed was known for his diplomacy, his sense of duty, his quiet creativity and inventiveness. He loved the outdoors and nature, especially the long walks on the beach, swimming and floating in the ocean. In recent years, he was regularly seen walking his dog around the neighborhood at the crack of dawn. Anne enjoyed singing in the church choir and volunteering with the Decatur Emergency Assistance Ministry. She was also skilled in many kinds of needlework, including knitting, needlepoint, and embroidery. Her pound cake was a family tradition.
They are survived by their four children, Kit Travis Muehlman of Seattle, Mary Travis and husband Rik Hodge of Decatur, Edward O Travis and wife Ann Benners Travis of Austin TX, Sue M Travis and husband Andy Robertson of Iowa City, and grandchildren, Anne Mariah Muehlman, Travis Hodge, Raymond Muehlman, Parker Hodge, Kelly Robertson, Sarah Robertson, Kate Travis, and Mary Travis, and Anne's sister Mary Bacon Alexander of Dallas TX.
