Richard Monroe was born 08 Jan 1809 in Colchester, Delaware Co, NY, the son of Marvin Monroe and Eleanor Howard.
He married Martha B. Alexander on 17 Apr 1831 at McClure, Broome Co, NY, the daughter of Simon Alexander, II and Hannah Meeker.
Richard and Martha had twelve children: Orlando, Adeline, Marvin, Reuben William, Martha Ann, Richard, George Lewis, Jane Mariah, Ellen Amelia, Franklin Pierce, Orin Pierce and Clark.
Richard enlisted as a Private in Co A, 137th NYSV Infantry at Sanford, Broome Co, NY on 18 Aug 1862. He fought in the battles of Antietam and Bolivar; and died of disease at Harpers Ferry on 27 Feb 1863.
His son Marvin died at the Battle of Petersburg on 26 Jun 1864 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
His son George Lewis died in a Rebel prisoner of war camp after being captured on 15 Sep 1864, his place of rest is not known.
