Claude H. (Pappy) Leaman,
well known retired post office
clerk, died at the Washington County
Hospital late yesterday, a few
hours after being struck by a
truck at the court house corner.
Mr. Leaman would have celebrated
his 82nd birthday this Thursday.
He was crossing the street when
struck by a truck driven by Charles
I. Knepper, Hagerstown Rt, 3. He
was taken to the hospital by the
Community Rescue Service and at
first his injuries were not believed
Mr. Leaman was a son of John
F. and Jane E. Young Leaman,
and besides being a retired post office
clerk, worked as a bookbinder
years ago. He and his wife long
operated a boarding house and
dining room at 44 East Washington
Mr. Leaman resided at 14 East
Avenue and was a member of St.
Paul's M. E. Church, the Men's
Bible Class, the Golden Star Council,
No. 25, Sons and Daughters of
Liberty, social member of the
Washington County Council No. 13,
Jr. O. U. A. M. for 60 years.
He is survived by a sister, Mrs.
Charles A. Byer, Chambersburg,
and nieces and nephews.
The body was removed to the
Rest Haven Funeral Chapel where
services will be held Thursday at
2 p. m. in charge of the Rev. Dr. J.
E. Kemp Horn. Burial in Rest Haven
Cemetery. Friends may call
at the chapel after 9 a. m. Wednesday
