Dr. Matthew J. Mitchell, husband of Ellen L. (Foley) Mitchell, passed away this morning at his late residence, 212 Winthrop Street. He had been in ill health for a period of several months and his condition for the past few days had been considered serious. Dr. Mitchell was born in the old Mitchell homestead, Middleboro Avenue, East Taunton, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Margaret M. and the late John Mitchell. He was educated in the public schools of Taunton and on the completion of his course he entered the employ of Cobb, Bates and Yerxa, at their store on Taunton Green. Later he became enrolled as a student at the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery at Baltimore, MD and graduated from that institution with the degree of D.D.S. After passing the State board examinations for Rhode Island and Massachusetts, he opened an office at 56 Taunton Green which and been occupied for many years by the late Dr. Dunham.
He married Miss Ellen L. Foley and of the union three children were born, Robert, Albert and Matthew, all of whom survive him. He also leaves his wife and his mother.
Few men in Taunton enjoyed a wider acquaintance than Dr. Mitchell and his friendship was one to be treasured as he was a man of high character and of sterling integrity who was a true and devoted father and a kind and loving husband. He took particular pride in his home and within a few years had completed the building of his handsome residence on Winthrop Street.
In his profession as a dentist he was a recognized expert, faithful and attentive to duty, he commanded the respect of the people with whom he had business as well as his fellow practitioners in Taunton. He had been engaged in the profession in this city for a period of twenty years. He was a member of the Taunton Dentist's Club and in 1921 was president of that organization while he was also a member of the board of directors. He took an active interest in the club affairs and always attended the annual meetings and assisted in the arrangements of the program. Dr. Mitchell was also a member of the Southeastern district of the National Dental Association.
For many years he was affiliated with the Taunton Automobile Club, being one of the original members, and had always been interested in the purposes which the club carried out. He had served as a member of the governing board for several years and at the time of the annual meetings each year was generally a member of the committee of arrangements. He served for several terms as president of the Taunton Gentleman's Driving Club and owing to the deep interest he took in the club program the meetings which were conducted during his term of office were among the best of the club. He interested others in the work of the driving club and the members were always loud in their praise of his activities. A great lover of horse flesh, Dr. Mitchell, a few years ago was the owner of the brood mare Genesta and also possessed several colts of pedigree stock. At one time several of his colts were trained at Readville. However for the past three years although he has been interested in horses he has not been an owner as he sold his high class stock several years ago.
He was a member of Taunton Council No. 82 Knights of Columbus, of Taunton Lodge of Elks No. 150 B.P.O.E. and was a director of the East Taunton Co-operative Bank.
