Michael Branch, son of Elias Branch Sr. and Lucy DeVaugh, was born April 14, 1831 in Laurens County, Georgia. He married on December 1853 to Susannah "Susan" Baxley, daughter of Wilson Baxley and Mary Johnson.
Michael Branch was a farmer and started farming for himself at the age of 17. He served as a Representative from Appling County in 1878-1879 and again in 1887-1888. He was a 2nd Lieutenant in Company "B" 54th Georgia Infantry Regiment C.S.A, enlisting on April 22, 1862. After being in a number of hard-fought battles, he was badly wounded in his leg at the Battle of Atlanta on July of 1864. He had gangrene in the wound, but was able to get to Savannah. There he hitched a ride on a wagon home. He was in a wheelchair for a year after the was and suffered from the injury the rest of his life. He was able; however, to carry on his farming activities.
He served on the Board of School Commissioners in 1888 and from 1895 until his death on September 28, 1910. Michael passed away at his home and was buried at Baxley Graveyard. His wife, Susan Baxley Branch, was buried there also when she past away on September 11, 1914.
