Killed By A Negro. J.N. Blitch Shot Dead By A Turpentine Hand. The Murderer Had Been Fined $5 For Gambling. He Demanded His Wages And Was Refused Payment Before Saturday. The Fatal Shot Followed. The Murderer Escapes.

Willacoochee, Ga., May 5
J.N. Blitch, the junior member of the firm of L. Carter & Co., turpentine operators, eight miles south of this place, was shot and instantly killed by Zack Holmes, colored, about sunset last night. Mr. Blitch had fined the negro $5 for gambling, in violation of orders given to the hands on the place. This offended the negro and he, with Winchester rifle in hand, went to Mr. Blitch, demanding a settlement, including the $5 which had been deducted from his wages. He was told that he would have to wait until pay day, at which the negro became boisterous and fired upon Mr. Blitch, the ball taking effect about the left collar bone. The murdered man never spoke, but fell from the steps of his commissary upon which he was sitting, a dead man. The negro escaped and is still at large. Excitement is at a fever heat. A posse with bloodhounds are scouring the woods in the vicinity, where it was supposed the negro was hiding, but up to this time no trace of the murderer has been discovered. It was a cold blooded and unprovoked murder, without the slightest cause or provocation. The entire country is aroused and a determined effort is being made to catch the culprit. Mr. Blitch leaves a wife and three children. His life was insured in the New York Mutual for $2,000 and in the Equitable for $5,000. The murderer is a ginger cake colored negro, about five feet, eight inches high. He weighs 165 pounds, has stooping shoulders, speaks quickly and has a rather intelligent expression. Mr. Blitch's remains will be carried to Odum and buried tomorrow. Mr. Blitch had many friends in this section.
The negro was under the influence of whiskey when the murder was committed. He is a notorious character.

A precious one from us has gone, A voice we loved has stilled. A place is vacant in our home, Which never can be filled. God in His wisdom has recalled, The boon His love has given, And though the body molders here, The soul is safe in Heaven
