Cecil W. Johnsen, 84, of Silverdale died Sept. 12, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
Cecil was born Aug. 24, 1917, in Silverdale to Harry and Celia (Greaves) Johnsen. He was a member of one of Silverdale's early pioneer families and lived his entire life within a half-mile radius of the original family home. His family was one of the original donors of land along the Clear Creek Trail. Cecil was considered by many to be one of the "unofficial mayors" of Silverdale as it grew, and he was a local icon.
He served in the coast guard and the Merchant Marine and worked as a plumber until he retired from Lent's in 1978. He was a member of Bremerton Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 631 for over 50 years, where he mentored and trained some of the finest plumbers and fitters of this generation.
He was an Eagle Scout and played semi-professional baseball for the Bremerton Bluejackets. He enjoyed gardening and maintained a magnificent fruit and vegetable garden that many have harvested over the years. He was an avid baseball and football fan who enjoyed attending Mariners and Seahawks games with his granddaughter. He also enjoyed fishing, shrimping, clamming and trips to Reno.
He will be greatly missed by his family, which includes his wife, Cynthia, of 61 years; his son and special daughter-in-law, Brian and Donna Johnsen of Silverdale; his son, Dean Johnsen of Silverdale; and his granddaughters, Lisa Johnsen of Seattle, and Tanya Johnsen of Seabeck. He was preceded in death by his brother, Harry L. Johnsen, and on Aug. 20, 2001, by his sister, Marian C. (Johnsen) Horner.
Private family services have been held. Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to Jackson Hall Memorial Association, P.O. Box 1489, Silverdale, WA 98383.
