Mary Alice Messey, 91, passed away Friday, May 14, 2010, at Lenoir Woods in Columbia.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 16, at Epple Chapel in Columbia. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until time of services. Private entombment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.
She was born Nov. 14, 1918, to Ethel Grace and John Clarence Huffman of Atlanta, Mo.
Mary graduated from Atlanta High School in 1936 in a class of 16. She received a teaching degree in three years from Northeast Missouri State (now known as Truman State University) and graduated with honors. She also attended Northwestern University in Chicago.
Her first teaching job was in Canton in 1939, where she taught high school business for two years. She then accepted a job in Herculaneum, where she taught commerce for three years.
She met her husband, Lucian Milton Messey, in Herculaneum. They married July 23, 1944, in Long Beach, Calif.
She taught her children well and her kind, gentle, peaceful manner was an example for all.
She moved to Columbia in 1968. She enjoyed all of her friendships in the Tuesday Women's Club, her bridge group and her Friday luncheon friends.
Survivors include her three children, Robert John Messey and wife Gloria of St. Louis, Suzanne McDavid and husband Robert of Columbia, and Richard C. Messey and wife Donna of St. Louis; seven grandchildren, Richard Mills Messey of St. Louis, Kimberly McDavid Schmidt of Denver, Scott McDavid of New York City, Cynthia Messey of Seattle, Catherine Ann Messey of Overland Park, Kan., Kevin Messey of San Diego, and Dale Messey of St. Louis; and five great-grandchildren, Jake, Anna, Garret, Bergen and Drew.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years on Nov. 30, 1998.
