Birth: Jan. 20, 1944
Death: Apr. 16, 1960

A Russell youth, 16-year-old Terence Lee Fink, was crushed to death late Saturday when a huge rock shelf collapsed on him as he was fishing just below the dam at the city lake south of town.

Terry, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Fink, 651 Margaret St., was on an all-day fishing excursion with a companion when the accident happed at about 4 p.m. He was standing on the edge of the spillway below the pump house when the limestone overhang began to crack and slide. The boy had no opportunity to get clear of the falling rock and was pinned beneath a massive slab.

A coroners jury has been impaneled and is to meet at 8 p.m. this evening in the courtroom to rule on the death. Member of that jury are LeRoy Foote, Rev. Art Anderson, Phillip Bender, Milton Short, L. Rouse and C. E. Brandenburg.

The accident was reported to the sheriff's office at about 4:20 p.m. The boy's companion, Robert Eugene Lolley, 14, had tried to dig Terry out but could not move the large rocks. He ran to the Lawrence Mohl home near the lake on the South Highway 281. Mrs. Mohl reported the incident to the sheriff while Mohl, a dirt contractor, returned to the scene with a 1/2-ton pickup equipped with a power winch. Working under the direction of officers and ambulance crew, Mohl freed the body at about 5:30 p.m.

Terry had stayed all night with Robert at the home of his mother, Mrs. Darlene J. Lolley, 29 S. Lincoln. Mrs. Lolley took the boys out at 6:30 a.m. Saturday and took lunch to them at about 11 a.m. At that time they were fishing west of Highway 281.

The Lolley boy was not injured. He was standing a short distance away from Terry and out of the way of the slide. The whole incident occurred so quickly Robert didn't realize what was happening, reports said.

The son of Marvin and Phyllis G. (Hill) Fink, Terry was born Jan. 20, 1944, at Hays. He was a sophomore at Russell High School, a member of the Methodist church, a Star Scout in Troop 118 at Russell and a member of the Coronado Council Explorer Group.

Survivors include his parent, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Fink of Russell and Mr. and Mrs. Hance Hill of Holyrood. One infant brother preceded him in death.

Rite will be at the Trinity Methodist Church at 2 p.m. tomorrow with Rev. Carl W. Eklund officiating. Burial will be in the Russell City Cemetery. Classmates and friends of the boy will act as casket bearers. They are Eddie and Terry Campbell, Nick Weidle, Dale Meier, Bob Lolley and Merwin Colburn.
