James Bennett Cochran, known as Bennett, was the eldest child and only son of Dr. James D. Cochran and Mary Ann Bennett of Pennsylvania. Mr. Cochran was 11 years of age when his father died in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania where the family resided and Doctor Cochran practiced medicine. After the death of Doctor Cochran, Mary A. Cochran and her six children moved to Meadville, Pennsylvania. Three of Bennett's five sisters survived him, Anna J. Cochran (Mrs. W. B. Callender), Marion Cochran (Mrs. Charles Johnson) and Miss Francis Cochran. His sister Josephine died in January 1862 at the age of 14. It is unknown when his youngest sister Amanda passed away. The 1870 U.S. Census at Meadville indicates she was 15 years of age. She does not appear in the 1880 U.S. Census. Mr. Cochran married Caroline Amelia "Caddie" Smith who had moved to Meadville with her father following the death of her mother in Philadelphia. Bennett and Caddie had four children. Their son Rufus only lived to the age of 17 and their two youngest daughters died at the age of 3 and 6 months respectively. Only their daughter Samantha known as "Mantie" lived to adulthood. Mr. Cochran resided in Meadville, Pennsylvania until 1889 where he was a respected citizen and Mayor-Elect. Following the death of his wife Caddie in 1889, Bennett moved with his daughter "Mantie" to Bradford, Pennsylvania where he engaged in a business with his brother-in-law William B. Callender known as Callender & Cochran, Druggists at 85 Main.
