According to Josef Hugenberg's "Die Reise ohne Wiederkehr", she was born in Rüssel bei Ankum, Bersenbrück, Königreich Hannover (Kingdom of Hanover), Deutsche Bund (German League).
After her husband died in the Civil War, she married Jakob Schmidt in 1867 and he died before 1870. They had one child, Henry Schmidt (b. ca. 1868 Buffalo County, Wisconsin). According to her Widows Pension record she was born at Bersenbrück and her parents names were Gerd Hermann and Elisabeth Marie (Zumberge) Korte. She had a brother, Henry who became the Damm childrens' guardian for the pension payments; and two sisters who remained in Hastrup (Bersenbrück). She lived the majority of her life in the USA at Buffalo City, Buffalo County, Wisconsin until after 1900 when they moved to Winona, Minnesota. She continued to live with her daughter Franziska "Frances" Damm Fischer's family until she died.
