"The emigrant ancestor of this old Fayette county family, Thomas Junk, came to America from Ireland, settling in New Jersey. He had two sons, Robert and John, and with them came to Fayette county, PA, about 1780. He took up land in Uniontown, and on February 1 1796, received a warrant for 186 and 3/4 acres on the branch of Redstone creek, surveyed to him under the name of 'Consolation.' The patent for the tract bears date April 16, 1798. The sons settled: Robert in what is now Dunbar township, John in North Union; both were farmers and men of unusual size and strength, and these family characteristics are yet noted in their descendants. From Robert and John Junk, who both married, spring the several families of the name found in Fayette county.
(II) Robert, son of Thomas Junk, the emigrant, was probably born in Ireland, and came to this country with his father. Nothing can be told of his life prior to leaving New Jersey and coming to Fayette county in 1780 with his father Thomas and brother John. He settled in Dunbar township, where he married and followed farming all his life. Among his children was a son Thomas, of whom further.
(III) Thomas (2), son of Robert Junk, was born in Fayette county, PA, and died in 1850, comparatively a young man. He was a farmer of the county, owning his own land. He married (first) Mary Allen, who died young; (second) Jemima or Julia Ann, daughter of Peter Humbert, an early settler and farmer of Fayette county. Children by first wife: Robert, now a wholesale merchant of Burlington, Iowa; George, enlisted in the Union army from Fayette county, was captured in battle and confined in one of the southern prison pens, where he died. Children of his second wife: (son) Ashbel, of whom further; Mary, married George Dunn, and resides at Laurel Hill, PA."
