Alice Cutler – November 13, 1871 – May 2, 1894
DEATH OF MISS ALICE CUTLER
We clip the following item from the Osage News. The subject of it is the oldster daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Cutler, former residents of Decorah, but now of Visalia, California. She will be remembered by many Decorians as a visitor for several months last year at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hammond Beard:
May 2nd, 1894, just as the light of day commenced to streak the eastern horizon, the light in Miss Alice Cutler's young life went out, and her spirit took its flight on the wings of the morning to the land of eternal light and life.
Some two and a half years ago Miss Cutler came from her home in southern California to visit her uncle, Hon. J. B. Cutler, and study music with her cousin Mrs. Mate Stevenson. Last fall she went to Sanborn, Iowa, to engage in teaching music, where she was taken sick about the first of March with an attack of Bright's Disease of the kidneys. As she kept growing worse Mrs. Stephenson went to her about five weeks ago and after careful nursing for two weeks was able to bring her home. Notwithstanding she had the most constant care and unremitting attention the disease could not be checked in its ravages until it had done its deadly work.
Miss Cutler was a bright young lady twenty-two years of age and of a most cheerful disposition, a characteristic that marked her life to the last moment. Her mother left California Sunday morning with the hope of seeing her daughter yet alive, but it was too late, as she cannot reach here before tonight at the earliest. The funeral services will probably occur tomorrow.

Alice was the daughter of Leonard Cutler Jr. and Delila "Lila" (maiden name unknown) Cutler.
Her father was born August 16, 1837 in Indiana, the son of Leonard Cutler Sr, and his wife Eleanore (Blair) Cutler. Leonard Sr. and his next wife Jane (Livingston) Cutler are buried in Winnesheik County. Leonard Sr. had at least two, maybe three wives.
Her father was still alive in the 1892 voters registration and living in Venice, Tulare Co., California. By 1900 her mother was a widow and listed in Los Angeles Ward 5, Los Angeles California as Lila Cutter, 62, widow born March 1838 in Pennsylvania. Her sister Lillian born March 1870 in Iowa is listed with her mother. The mother and sister are both still alive in the 1910 and 1920 Census records with the last one in Glendale, California. The age in 1870 for Lillian is 10, 1910 for Lillian is 50 and in 1920 it's 58…(??anywhere from 1860-1870 so who knows which one is right)
Her uncle, the Hon. J. B. Cutler mentioned in the article was James B. Cutler born December 7, 1830, mayor of Osage…also buried in Osage Cemetery.
