Alexander "Greek" Athas, 86, passed on to our Lord and Savior at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Born on October 6, 1922, he was the son of Peter Athanasopoulos (Athas) and Eugenia Poulos Athas. Alex was a three sport letterman (football, basketball and track) at Warren Easton and a four year letterman at Tulane (basketball and track). He was a three time All-Southeastern Conference basketball selection at Tulane University. Alex was also inducted into the Louisiana, City of New Orleans, Tulane, AHEPA and Warren Easton Halls of Fame. He served his country as a Petty Officer in World War II in the United States Navy in the Pacific theatre at the battle of Okinawa. "Greek" played professional basketball in the ABL at Kansas City, Utica and Elmira, New York where he met his wife of 57 years, Nancy. Over a 35 year period he taught and coached basketball, track and football at Warren Easton High School. He was a proud member of the Greek Orthodox Holy Trinity Cathedral and the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA).
Alex Athas is survived by his wife, Nancy Titus Athas, son Alex Athas (Karen), daughter Deborah Dardis and son Stephen Athas, four grandchildren, Alex (Holly) Athas, Christian Athas, Peter (Molly) Athas and Nancy Dardis, two great-grandchildren Drake and Branson Athas, numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Eugenia Athas, sisters Sophie Manthos (George), Helen Miramon (Charles) and Cecelia Blanda (Sebastian), and grandson Matthew Dardis.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERAL HOME, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., on Friday evening, May 1, 2009 from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM. A visitation will be held at GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL OF THE HOLY TRINITY, 1200 Robert E. Lee Blvd., New Orleans on Saturday, May 2, 2009, beginning at 10:00 AM followed by the Funeral Service at 11:00 AM. Interment at Lake Lawn Park.
