Margarett Lucinda Van Pool was born May 30, 1855, in Texas, daughter of Obed Van Pool and Mary E. Gray.

Lucinda's father, Obed Van Pool, was a First Lieutenant in the 12th Texas Calvary, 12th Regiment (Parson's Mounted Volunteers) that fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War. According to the Texas Marriage, 1814-1909, Obed and Mary married on March 24, 1853 in Kaufman County, Texas.

Van Pool, age 4, born in Texas; was living in Kaufman, Texas (Kaufman County) with her father, Obed Van Pool, a farmer, age 35, born in Tennessee; and her mother, Martha J., age 22; born in Missouri. Living in the household was Lucinda's four siblings: Martha J., age 5; Sarah E., age 3; David N., age 2; and Mary C., age 4 months; all born in Texas. Also living in the household was Robert M.
