| Birth: | Apr. 9, 1921 | | Death: | May 15, 2008 |  John S. Carpenter, 87, of Syracuse, NY, died at his home, Thursday, May 15, 2008. He is a graduate of the Mt. Hermon School, Mt. Hermon, MA, and received his bachelor's degree from Hamilton College, Hamilton, NY. He was a member of Psi Upsilon fraternity. Mr. Carpenter served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was president of W.D. Carpenter Co., a family-owned business, for more than 40 years. He achieved the distinct honor of Eagle Scout as a youth and was a prolific reader and writer throughout his life. His book, Streetwise, a historical account of the naming of the streets and landmarks in the Syracuse area, was published in 1993; and due to popular demand, the book was reprinted several times. Mr. Carpenter was a 50-year member of the Syracuse Rotary Club and was active in the Syracuse Miniatures Club. Mr. Carpenter is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Mary-Louise Hills Carpenter; as well as two children, John S. Carpenter Jr. and Nancy L. Cook; a daughter-in-law, Jill Carpenter; son-in-law, Randy Cook; and grandson, David J. Carpenter. Contributions may be made to the American Heart Assoc. of Syracuse. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2008, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Greenleaf Funeral Home. A private family service at Oakwood Morningside Cemetery on Monday.
