Born in Davidson County, North Carolina to Kenneth Jackson Bates and Delores Libouse (Kresen) Bates. Kenny had one older sister, Vivian, who died in infancy, two younger sisters, Judith Kathleen 'Judy' and Karen Jeannette, and two younger brothers, William Floyd 'Floyd' and Jeffrey David 'David'.
According to his mom, my great-aunt Delores, and what she told our family, Kenny was married and his wife was expecting their first child when he died.
I met Kenny when he was in the Navy and stationed in the San Diego area. He was a true redneck and proud of it, though he also had a soft side. He wrote me a poem when I was about thirteen. We would often go to the drive in movies together, but my mother would not allow us to be alone so she sent one of my younger brothers with us, usually in his pajamas. It would irritate Ken to no end when said brother in his pajamas would have to go to the bathroom and he would have to walk him up to the snack bar area to use the bathroom. He was fun and a real smart ass too! One time when we were at the swap meet with my family, I had walked a bit ahead of him while looking around. He caught up with me and in a loud voice, so everyone around could hear, said, "Marry you lady? Hell, I don't even know you!" I wanted to smack him so hard! But he could always make me laugh, even when he was pissing me off. When Kenny died, I was heartbroken.
