Mortimer Turnbull

Mortimer Lee "Mort" Turnbull of Eugene died Nov. 20 of age-related causes. He was 93.

Turnbull was born March 7, 1908, in Mill City, Wash., to Henry and Jessie Carlile Turnbull. Both of his grandfathers served in the Civil War. He married Isabel Weinrick in Eugene on Feb. 3, 1934.

He moved with his family to Eugene in 1910 and attended Eugene schools, where his curiosity for books was encouraged at the first city library in Eugene.

Turnbull helped organize and run the Willakenzie Water and Fire District and was one of 25 volunteer firefighters who built and manned the Willakenzie Fire Station. He also built his family's home.

Turnbull was a founding member and elder of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Eugene in 1952 and was active in the Willakenzie Parent-Teachers Association. He also organized a Boy Scout Troop and sponsored Little League teams.

He retired as state project supervisor from AT&T Western Electric in 1969 after 35 years. After retirement, he designed and manufactured hydraulic equipment for commercial fishing boats. He sold Turnbull Marine Equipment in 1987.

Turnbull's other interests included family camp-outs, home gatherings, gardening, reading and world travel with his wife.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Lee of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; two daughters, Susan Craven of Kent, Wash., and Kathleen Griffin of Eugene; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service was held. Entombment was at Rest-Haven Memorial Park in Eugene. Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Sacred Heart.
