Charles was the third of six children born to Levi Lawrence Byers and Mamie Mae Frey. He married Janet V. Baker and together they had four children: Lawrence L., David L., Steven M. and Vickie M.

NEW OXFORD - Charles E. (Tilt) Byers, 83, of New Oxford, died Tuesday at his home. He was the husband of Janet V. (Baker) Byers.

The service will be 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Feiser Funeral Home Inc., 302 Lincoln Way West, New Oxford. Burial will be in New Oxford Cemetery, with graveside military rites by the Allied Veterans Council of Hanover. View ing will be 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Byers was born Aug. 5, 1918, in New Oxford. He was the son of the late Lawrence and Mamie (Frey) Byers.

He worked at Medusa Cement Co. in York, retiring in 1980 after 25 years of service. He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in New Oxford, Abbottstown Fire Company, New Oxford Social and Athletic Club and National American Association of Retired Persons; a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8956 in West York and American Legion Post 14 in Hanover. He signed to play baseball for Cleveland and finished his career with Wilkes Barre Class A in 1948; he also played with several local teams; was the pitching coach for New Oxford Junior Baseball Clubber Team and Abbottstown for 25 years. He was inducted into "Hall of Fame" Archives in Cooperstown, N.Y., in 1988. He was a U.S. Army staff sergeant, serving in Japan.

Mr. Byers also is survived by three sons, Larry L. Byers of Abbottstown, David L. Byers of Dover and Steven M. Byers of Allentown; a daughter, Vickie M. Buckley of Littlestown; nine grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; a great-grandchild; and four stepgreat-grandchil dren.

Officiating at the service will be his pastor, the Rev. Craig Stout.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 20 S. Peter St., New Oxford 17350.
