Death: May 31, 2008

Services for Nicholas J. Arend, 85, of Gainesville are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Gainesville with the Rev. Don Brennan, O.S.A., officiating. Burial is set to follow in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home.

Mr. Arend died May 31, 2008, at Denton Regional Medical Center.

He was born August 25, 1922 in Calera, Okla. to Nicholas and Lena Marie Rauschuber Arend.

On July 17, 1952, he married Frances Hischuck in Montgomery, Ala.

Nick Arend attended St. Peter's School in Lindsay and the Duncan Aircraft School. He was a career Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. Following his discharge, he was the owner/operator of a Texaco full-service station and later was a Master Machinist for National Supply Company. He had a life-long passion for cattle ranching and farming. He was known as the "Instructor" in several domino circles in the Gainesville area. He enjoyed the friendly banter among the players as much as the game itself.

His strict discipline of life was that one lived his life to stand on one's own two feet, say what you mean and mean what you say. That discipline served his children well in living their own lives, and he will be forever remembered as a caring and loving father.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Arend of Gainesville, daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Bob West, of Gainesville; sons and daughters-in-law, Nick and Susie Arend of Manvel and Doug and Diane Arend of Weatherford and friends of the family Richard and Mary Klement and Elizabeth and Christopher Klement; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, his sister, Helen Yosten; in-laws, Kittie, Doris and Peg Arend; Elizabeth Pristas; Ralph and Julie Lindsay; George and Gloria Hischuck; Jim and Anna Mae Stark.

He was preceded in death by his parents; by his brothers, Fred, John, M.R. (Dick) and Bill; by his sisters, Florence, Mary Frances (Babe); by his parents-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George Hischuck, Sr.; and a brother-in-law, Elmer Pristas.
