Ambrose T. McConwell Ambrose Thomas "Tom" McConwell, Mission, son of Ambrose and Mary McConwell, was born November 14, 1914 on a farm in Wetmore and died March 17, 2003 at St. Luke's Hospital. He attended Arkansas City Community College and the University of Kansas, graduating in 1938. While at KU, he was president of the Young Democrats. He served in the Pacific as an officer in the U.S. Navy in World War II and in the Korean Conflict. His professional life was as a business owner, first in heating and air conditioning and later in the home alarm system field. McConwell was a member of the Old Mission Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rile, Abdallah Shrine Greeters Unit, and the Order of Quetzalcoat. His volunteer activities included Shawnee Mission Sertoma Club, Johnson County Christmas Bureau, The Salvation Army, teaching Sunday school at Old Mission Methodist Church, and delivering Meals on Wheels. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and a former member of Milburn Country Club and Tomahawk Hills Country Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, LaVergne Nelson McConwell. Survivors include his son Ed McConwell of Overland Park; daughter Patsy Shawyer of Prairie Village; nine grandchildren; and eight greatgrandchildren. Funeral services will be held March 20 at 10 a.m. at Countryside Christian Church. Burial will follow in Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens.
